"Thanksgiving Prayer"

Today's Expression

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men;

but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.

~E.P. Powell

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget

that the highest appreciation is not to utter

words, but to live by them.

~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

He who thanks but with the lips
Thanks but in part;
The full, the true Thanksgiving
Comes from the heart.

~J.A. Shedd

Thanksgiving is the holiday of peace, the celebration

of work and the simple life... a true folk-festival that speaks

the poetry of the turn of the seasons, the beauty of

seedtime and harvest, the ripe product of the year - and the

deep, deep connection of all these things with God.

~Ray Stannard Baker (David Grayson)

Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863. In that year, during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln made his Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. He asked citizens to “to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving
and praise . . . .”

It was not until 1941 that Congress designated the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day, thus creating a federal holiday. Read more about Thanksgiving Day.

Turkey became the traditional Thanksgiving fare because at one time it was a rare treat. During the 1830s, an 8- to 10-pound bird cost a day’s wages. Today, they still remain a celebratory symbol of bounty. In fact, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin ate roast turkey in foil packets for their first meal on the Moon.
